A vast clothing dump in Chile’s Atacama Desert is visible from space, but its true weight remains unknown.

My house is visible from space. Most things are. That’s the whole point of Google earth. Seeing things from space isn’t really impressive.

This is still wasteful and awful, but not because of the space bit

The higher resolution images, where you can actually make out your house, are taken from planes, not satellites.

That is a 30cm image taken by an Airbus satellite for commercial purposes. You can make out cars and so forth pretty well.

Yes and no: satellites with a resolution of ~1m/pixel exist, it’s just that they are military use & all we get to see is aerial photographs.

You can buy 30cm resolution satellite images from private companies today. Obviously the US government and some others will have even better ones.

          Just as prove: https://space-solutions.airbus.com/imagery/our-optical-and-radar-satellite-imagery/pleiades-neo/

I’d believe you without proof, I just pulled an approximate number out of my recollection from like 10 years ago. :)
