There are dozens of music-player applications for Linux; the options range from bare-bones programs that only play local files to full-blown music-management projects with a full suite of tools for managing (and playing) a music collection. Strawberry is in the latter category; it has a bumper crop of features, including smart playlists, support for editing music metadata tags, the ability to organize music files, and more.
Strawberry is something of an old-school music manager; it is designed for users who are serious about maintaining a local music collection rather than simply consuming whatever is available via streaming services. Its set of features includes just about everything users need for importing new music, creating playlists for every occasion, and weeding out duplicate songs, as well as maintaining an accurate and searchable database of the collection. It’s written in C++, uses the Qt 6 framework, depends on GStreamer for codec support, and is available under the GPLv3.
Love strawberry, switched from amarok to clementine after the ui redesign and kept using it waaay too long until I found out there was a fork still being developed (that’s strawberry). The whole concept of a music library manager might be kinda outdated for most people, but strawberry is imo the state of that art. Shoutout to foobar2k though, the real og
I tried to like Strawberry. I really did. Its not awful but its not great…
The UI leaves a lot to be desired. It wasn’t great at scraping metadata.
Ultimately it feels clunky and dated.
Ultimately I settled in Navidrome with Feishin.
Once you go through the hassle of setting up a Navidrome server the choice of music player really opens up. On my desktop I’m still going back and forth between Supersonic and Psyonic. I love both. On my phone I bought Symfonium and I’m really happy with it. It’s so easy now to pick some music to carry along.
Symfonium is great. I use that over Tempo for physical phone because of Android Auto support.
Desktop and laptop wise I can’t find another player that I quite like.
I’ve tried using Strawberry on Bazzite with a remote library on my local server but I get crashes/hangs. Ive started using Picard to do my metadata editing and I play the music with Emby.
