I’m finally off work. Three day weekend!

This post is for casual conversation if you don’t feel like making a post office your own.

I’ve had a stressful week. My sleep study results came back as inconclusive, so the specialist wants me to undergo another one using a different machine. I tried to tell them that I don’t think that’s going to make a difference because the reason the study was inconclusive is because I could not sleep for the last third of the test. The pressure going through the mask was too high and made natural breathing difficult. Perhaps there are some people out there that can manually control their breathing while asleep, but I am not one of them. What I was hoping would be the best night’s sleep that I’ve had in years ended up being the worst, so I am not looking forward to trying it all over again.

Elsewhere, I got into a heated discussion about AI in a community that I had thought would approach controversial topics with a more level discussion, but other users immediately resorted to insults, swearing, and at least one outright blocked me. I spent a lot of time trying to make each of my responses measured and level, and I repeatedly reassured other users that I understood their position and that I wasn’t asking to change their feelings. My position was that AI has the potential to be one of the best tools humanity ever built, but currently it’s being used for all the wrong reasons. Most other users were insistent that there’s no nuance: all AI = bad. Because my premise did not 100% align with the community’s gestalt, they strawman’d me as a stand-in for all of their frustrations and anger towards the entire AI industry. Only one other user approached the conversation substantively, and they explicitly avoided making the disagreement personal, but they exited once the other users began resorting to absolutism, misattribution, and personal attacks.

I want to find a place where people can discuss differences and disagreements and remain calm. I want to become better at having real dialectics. But most people seem more interested in winning arguments and filtering out perceived contaminants.

I’d strongly advise thoroughly reading this document to help understand the many, MANY problems with AI - problems that, in my opinion, effectively nullify any potential benefit, and yet are unlikely to be solved any time…ever, really.

      Oh, and another thing!

My office at work has no windows, so no natural light. My only light are four florescent lights in the ceiling, and I have always HATED florescent lighting. To me they are the optical analog of wearing an itchy sweater, so I usually keep my office lights off and use a couple smaller desk lamps to illuminate my work space.

One of my colleagues recently moved to a different area, opening up their office (which has a window that lets in natural light). There is no prescribed pecking order on my team, but we were in agreement a while back that when that office cleared up that I could get first dibs because I’ve been here the longest.

At the end of last week I was working from home for a day, and in one of our team meetings one of my coworkers piped up and told me that he was going to take the office, that they had all talked about it and agreed. I wasn’t part of the conversation at all. I asked why they did that, knowing what we discussed earlier, and why they did that while I was out of the office. Their excuse was that because I sit in the dark anyway, there was no reason for me to get a window office.

I’m still frustrated about it. To them I must be only the quirky coworker that sits in the dark and listens to metal, so there’s no way that I’d actually like having a window. My teammates completely discounted that I keep my lights off/dim is because of sensitization problems. I can’t even talk about it without people thinking that I’m just being difficult and petty, and the higher I try to take it, the more difficult and petty they’ll think I am.

They can think what they like, facts are facts, it had previously been discussed that you have opportunity to be offered the office, as you have longevity there. It seems to have been done in a way to exclude you, by your explanation. I would state facts, ask if there’s going to be resolution and look for another job, if the results are unsatisfactory.

Went on a road trip (was about 250km each way) with my support worker today to the longest jetty in the southern hemisphere. I’ve been there a few times and it was really nice. It’s about 2km out to sea, each way

It would be amazing to see sunset or sunrise from there. You’d be able to see them both, I assume? I love driving to the top of Tassie for the same reason, just looking at the expanse of the sea. Beautiful. I’ve always wanted to catch a sunset from top of Tas, but I was only up there for work, so couldn’t stop and watch.

I have pictures! It popped up in my backyard one day. I didn’t even have to travel. It doesn’t look like the pictures to the naked eye, as much. But if you snap a shot you can see it vividly and then you notice the colours in the sky too. I don’t know if it’s always that way, or the one that randomly popped up in the sky directly above me, was just like that. It gives you that feeling like you’re small, but a part of something so much larger than yourself, like looking at a particularly beautiful (more visible) starry sky.

Oh wow, that’s awesome. I don’t know if I’ll ever get the chance to travel to western Australia, but if I do I’d like to add that to the trip.

I’m taking 50,000 units of Vitamin D once a week and I’m not use to having energy. I was at like…6 apparently.

Also I need to figure out better meals for me and husband and fuck it’s hard.

Happy weekend! My dad came this week and it has been a struggle to have any form of conversation with him. I try to talk to him about literally anything other than politics or shaming my personal choices, but somehow those are the only things he is capable of talking about.

I’m sorry you are dealing with that, it must be so deflating. How open-minded is your dad, if I may ask? My FiL is aging and experiencing some cognitive decline; though he’s been conservative most of his life, he’s only recently become immersed in hardline political rhetoric. He’s still a kind person, andhe loves his family – what has worked for me and my partner is reminding him that even though we have made decisions he may not agree with, we are are happy and (ostensibly) healthy. Connecting our situation to how his own father and grandfathers had viewed his choices and and the changes happening to society back then often helps him regain some perspective. I hope things improve, and that you and he can find some common ground.
