Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your opinion on the current state of AI/LLMsEnglish
1·1 day agoMaybe this is reflective of my media bubble, but I’ve never encountered someone claiming that LLMs should be used as calculators. Most of the advertising I’ve seen (not much) is mostly centered around natural language search and image recognition. I only really hear about them being bad at math from detractors, and I think it misses the mark of why AI companies are dangerous. The problem with LLMs is not that they’re bad at math, or even that they get non-math answers wrong sometimes. The problem is when they’re controlled by humans with a political axe to grind, who deliberately wish to obscure or distort the information their users can access, c.f. Grok.

21·2 days agoI generally make sure the entire block is evenly coated in a thin layer (a shop rag helps), then stick it in the oven at 450F for an hour to let the patina cure. After a few coats you should have a nice, even surface.

31·3 days agoI hear this criticism of LLMs all the time and I just don’t get it. They’re language models, they take language inputs and produce language outputs. They aren’t designed to do math. It’s like complaining that a reciprocating saw can’t do math.
It’s a low bar but it’s one of my favorite things in the bible. Lil catholic baby me was uh… stirred by it. Even jaded apostate adult me thinks it’s real pretty.
You don’t even need the errata for that:
How graceful are your feet in sandals, O queenly maiden! Your rounded thighs are like jewels, the work of a master hand. Your navel is a rounded bowl that never lacks mixed wine. Your belly is a heap of wheat, encircled with lilies. Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle. Your neck is like an ivory tower. Your eyes are pools in Heshbon, by the gate of Bath-rabbim. Your nose is like a tower of Lebanon, overlooking Damascus. Your head crowns you like Carmel, and your flowing locks are like purple; a king is held captive in the tresses. How fair and pleasant you are, O loved one, delectable maiden! You are stately as a palm tree, and your breasts are like its clusters. I say I will climb the palm tree and lay hold of its branches. O may your breasts be like clusters of the vine, and the scent of your breath like apples, and your kisses like the best wine that goes down smoothly, gliding over lips and teeth. I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me. Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the fields, and lodge in the villages; let us go out early to the vineyards, and see whether the vines have budded, whether the grape blossoms have opened and the pomegranates are in bloom. There I will give you my love. The mandrakes give forth fragrance, and over our doors are all choice fruits, new as well as old, which I have laid up for you, O my beloved.Songs 7:1-13. Oddly enough I don’t remember that one coming up for reading during mass, I had to find that one on my own.
“Manchester edition” 1793: The heading on Chapter 3 of Leviticus and the first verse has “bees” rather than “beeves” (plural of beef).

2·6 days agoThat is undeniably a very cool kind of firefighter, but firefighting is a team sport and I think they’re all cool.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you respond to "hey, how are you" when you feel like garbage?English

Really though, it depends entirely on the person. With my partner I will try to give the most complete answer I can, with friends and coworkers it depends on how close our relationship is. With strangers it may be a completely perfunctory answer to a completely perfunctory question, especially if I’m not up for defending a non-perfunctory answer, but I like to keep my answers real when I have the spoons for it.

1·13 days ago😆 This thread was what made me realize I’m at the 20 year mark. Funny how the milestones keep sneaking up. You’d think after doing it for so long getting older would feel more familiar.

I’ll enable FDE during the install for systems with sensitive data, but I don’t bother with secure boot. If I were deploying machines in unsecured areas (i.e. not my house) that also had sensitive data on board, I might look into it.
