I showed this to my 16 year old nephew and he was legit upset/offended and I had to turn it off.

He was shocked they could say ‘those bad words’ in a movie. I don’t dare show him Pulp Fiction.

huh, that isn’t a hollywood movie, it’s an art film.

plenty of weird art films still get made.

any black-face media has been systematically removed from the internet. you can’t stream any episode of any show that has it. you can typically only watch that content on DVD.

I see the message that anyone who is not rich is a loser. That’s what the problem is. All media characters are aspiring to be rich or they are totally miserable.

There is no respect for the middle class or working class people who are just happy.

I remember when OF was new and people would go around trying to shame people for consuming free porn and bragging how they were such good superior porn consumers and how they were ‘supporting young women’.

I notice folks don’t do that anymore.

The best thing I ever did was ignore the advice people gave me and figured out stuff on my own.

Because most advice I got was coming from a completely different universe and totally irrelevant to my own personal situation, and most advice-givers were straight up hypocrites, who were mostly only interested in me thinking they were great, when they were total jerks.

The issue is those communities thrive on their victim complexes, and they need people like you to wander in so they gangbang on you to affirm themselves.

If they were closed off to their own members, their victim-identity wouldn’t really sustain itself.

i have made the mistake of posting legit information on some of those communities, and the users swarms on you like sharks around chum, attacking you and down voting you and telling you how stupid and wrong you are for not agreeing with them, and telling you that your ‘facts’ are all ‘propaganda’ and their propaganda is the TRUTH.

Yeah it is. Intimidation, threats, and reporting you maliciously to remove your comments are all forms of violence.

They aren’t physical violence. But emotional and psychological violence are very real.

Violence is using coercive force to get what you want. Bullying is a form of violence.

Yeah, but the students don’t want to do that.

Majority just see it as a obligation they have to suffer through and want the path of least resistance and effort. The vast majority of human beings are allergic to learning and think it’s painful and miserable.

And then you have the minority of students who embrace learning, and the minority who actively reject it.

AI is an excuse to reduce costs.

What has been happening is they use AI to fire 2000 people, but then they want to re-hire 1500 of them as contractors at a higher pay rate… but w/o benefits which greatly reduces costs for the company.

It’s really just being used as leverage to dis-empower labor, esp in sectors where labor is paid ‘too much’. The tech sector massively over-hired and is still over-employed, hence why most of the news you hear is about tech company layoffs, as all their projections on pandemic-level growth ground to a halt once the pandemic was over in 23/24.

And yeah, most of it is media hype, because it freaks people out and gets them anxious and talking and eyes glued to screens and listening to talking heads endlessly bullshit about AI when they know next to nothing about it. For most people AI is a form of magic, like any technology.

And then you have the evangelists and the luddites on either side fanning the flames in their own ways, who claim AI will be mankind’s salvation, or it’s destruction…

Reality is it’s just the next ‘big thing’. it will fade into the background like all the ‘big things’ before it. We’ll have all these data centers doing lots of computing and all it will functionally end up being is just a major upgrade of a computing capacity. The question really is what will we do with it, will it be used productively, or will it just be used to flood the internet with endless bullshit. As if people themselves don’t already produce enough bullshit.

Then again, people’s capacity for consuming bullshit… is pretty infinite as we have seen from the rise of social media, influences, and podcasting. If you told anyone 15 years ago people would spend 8 hours a day listening to weirdos bullshit on the internet, they’d have thought you were nuts.

education is in flux.

some places are going anti-tech, like no screens at all.

others are pushing AI-literary graduation requirements.

and nobody seems to want to actually education anyone anymore because education is not really just job-training rather than education.

If you express a non-dominant viewpoint you get downvoted and insulted and threatened. Or the mods remove your posts, even if they are thoughtful and respectful. a lot of communities here have singular default viewpoints, that are extremist in nature.

The userbase itself is preventing diversity by attacking anyone, often violently, who doesn’t agree with them. Usually under the pretense that their viewpoint is the ONLY moral/good/correct one, and any alternative viewpoint is immoral/evil/wrong and you should therefore die. they believe the world consists of mutually exclusive binary choices.

It’s incredible pathetic. They also seem to play the game that any alternative viewpoint is also an existential threat to themselves… further justifying their need for violence.

A majority of the userbase here just want to live in their victim-bully echo chambers where they are free to slander others who are different than them and perpetually cast themselves as victims of those same others. They are trapped in their self-manufactured cycles of rage and shame.

The userbase needs to be more moderate and grown up.

Way too many of the users operating at a toddler/teenager level and they have victim-bully complexes. and when presented with adult things like facts and reasonable discourse, they throw temper tantrums. the lack of open-mindedness, curiosity, and respect for others differences is astounding.

this is what destroyed reddit. the sensitive wannabe edgelords became the mods and took over and destroyed so many communities. they say randomness, uniqueness, and diversity as threats to themselves and systematically stamped out those things until many of them became bland echo chambers of users parroting the same cliche talking points at teach other and bias-confirming, and banning/removing any content that didn’t mesh with their pre-selected ‘correct’ beliefs.

I legitimately adored reddit back when it was a diverse space of random people sharing things, but that when it was a weird niche website nobody knew about. it felt like a genuinely productive space to learn stuff from other people, rather than a endless stream of bullshit.

the issue with lemmy and fedi is that few users here seem to be interested in a pre-bullshit type of internet community, and very interested in having a space where they can push their own bullshit and get ‘followers’ rather than foster interaction.

a co worker years ago who loudly bragged about how she got fucked in the ass last night in the break room. and would flirt with me and every guy with a pulse in the office.

she got fired after multiple sexual harassment complaints

I also had a couple of co-workers hit on me really hard, and ask me out. they were trying to cheat on their boyfriends, so i politely declined seeing them again.

A lot of people realize that AI isn’t going to take that many jobs, and it’s just a paranoid talking point.

I use AI tools in my job… the vast majority of them constantly break and who has to fix that? Me. They break themselves with feature updates…

the AI panick is just fear of automation. automation often produces different kinds of jobs while it reduces others. also it increases throughput, meaning you need more workers.
