As there the difference is biggest, and lacking hardware support is fine. I only use AV1 if possible, recent-ish Intel GPUs and phones support it fine. Btw, my soon to be EOL Pixel can encode 1080p AV1 at 0,5x speed or so, using svt-av1 (the better, but software, encoder).
