    You did well to catch it at all during open flight, they one quick bird.

    If you can find where its favorite perches are then you will have more success getting it. There will be one more hidden close to its diving perch that it uses to check out if the area is ok, then the actual diving perch.

    It likes to take its time scoping out the fish before committing to a dive, they do a sort of sideways lean looking down with each eye. A bit like this:

      Oh, I do have a very few “good” kingfisher shots like that (not quite as good as that, alas) - one I posted here a while ago.

      But alas, this one was perching in undergrowth on the far side of a big river - I never got to see exactly where.

        Oh I remember that one, I really liked that one.

        For something so bright and colourful they can be quite good at hiding when they want to

        Thank you! They will sit when they feel safe, they make great models when they do with lots of great poses, by far one of our most photogenic birds in the UK.

    These are great! If you want a NatGeo-esque pic of a dive you gonna have to put in a literal month of work lol
