The threadiverse is small (compared to other major platforms) and I often see usernames that I recognize. How well do we notice each other around here?
I’ll start… my name’s “MrShankles” and I do be commenting/posting from time to time
I mainly recognize PugJesus, SatansMagottyCumFart and like the other two or three lithuanians on here.
I recognise your mum
Are they called MrsShankles?
Nah, she got divorced, but the kids kept the old name
I specifically use this platform to fly under the radar, if anyone remembers me. I apologize. Im usually on the toilet waxing bullshit till my leg goes numb.
I recognize a decent number of people, lots of famous frequent posters have already been mentioned but I also tend to remember trolls and people with bad takes.
I don’t really pay attention to user names when I read, but there are a few frequent posters that I’ve recognized
I don’t really pay attention. I come here to quip. It’s like a mental purge for me.
The big ones I recognize:
- SatansMaggottyCumFart
- Stamets
- The Picard Manuever
- poVoq
- PugJesus
- fossilesque
- Cowbee
- ComradeSharkFucker
- ThefuzzFurryComrade
- lumpenproletariat
- GodlessCommie
- Bad
- UniversalMonk
There’s a few more that I can’t think of off the top of my head. It’s nice that the community is small enough to recognize people so often.
Who was that one guy obsessively posting after he read “A Brave New World”?
Never had anyone recognize me (I post and comment sparsely and in short bursts) but I recognize a lot of other names. Most of which I’m sure the average Lemmy user recognizes.
I generally don’t recognize usernames and don’t look at them too much
There’s the guy who uses thorns (who I have tagged as Nigel þornberry)
There’s maybe a half-dozen frequent posters who I’m genuinely not sure if they’re masterful trolls, some kind of AI training bots, or just really need to go touch grass (preferably on their way to a therapist’s office.)
There’s one dude whose username just happened to stick out to me after having a random conversation or two with him and seeing him being a generally pretty decent dude around Lemmy, I tagged him “this guy seems cool” at some point, and at some point it occurred to me that he might appreciate knowing that, so I shot him a message, and sure enough he did. I now consider him to be a pretty good friend, which is a new experience for me, I’ve never really been one to have online friends, I (somehow) do pretty well at making friends in meatspace and have never really felt a need to seek out an online friendship.
There’s a handful of people who have said some incredibly dumb shit that I’ve tagged (for example one dude who I tagged “Tankie, down vote and ignore” although the last few times I’ve seen him pop up it seems like he may have mellowed out a bit, so good for him)
I’ve the thorn guy tagged as “uses thorns” and am now shamed about my lack of creativity.
I had someone else tagged as “second guy to use thorns” but they’re a lot less consistent about it.
Nigel þornberry
Made me laugh :D
Fully-qualified usernames:
There’s the guy who uses thorns (who I have tagged as Nigel þornberry)
That’d be @[email protected].
þat is indeed þe guy
I also love how bent-out-of-shape people get over the thorns.
I haven’t stalked his profile, but I feel like every time I’ve seen him come up he’s also seemed like a pretty cool and reasonable dude (I suppose it’s possible he’s off being a dick in the parts of Lemmy I don’t frequent, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt)
I have snarked him about it, myself. I have no objection to overtly affected personal expression (no hypocrite I). It’s just that reading a thorn unexpectedly feels like stubbing my toe, but in my brain.
for me the bogus rationalizations took it from something I could cope with to something that actively irritates me. maybe that’s part of the art.
Maybe. People usually have good reasons for doing things, to supplement the real reasons.
It’s harmless but it’s deliberately antisocial which rubs people the wrong way. They’re going out of their way to make their comments harder to reader.
I’ve never had a bad interaction with them but I do think it’s kind of obnoxious attention-seeking behavior
Sxan talks to me all the time and has always been great. I barely register the thorns now.
He’s one of my favorites.
I’m also a Sxan fan
Shout-out to “Nigel þornberry”
Ah Nigel þornberry. I appreciate the dedication to thorns, but ended up writing a script which replaces thorns in their texts because they stand out too much.
Added the tag now 😂
I came here to be misremembered.
I feel like I recognise maybe 80% of the posters I see…
I always recognize my admin. *waves
There’s a 4/5 chance that Ada notices me?? 😯
o.O
While 100% recognise you!
Seriously, big fan, keep up the good work <3
I recognise you!
Yay!
(Note to self: be on best behaviour, she’s onto me)
I tend to recognize usernames I see at least once a day, if they’re phrases or words. Not if they’re like strings of random characters…
on blahaj.zone, that’s not difficult, considering that 80% of the posts come from totallynotjessica and adora :-)
I tag users occasionally when they stand out to me, so I recognize those people but often forget why I tagged them as such lol

Do you get occasional tag reset on app update or is it only me?
Because of this I don’t bother anymore.
Not that I’ve ever noticed. What app do you use? I use summit on Android
Voyager
I didn’t know this was a thing.

ROFL! I’ve always wondered if anyone had tagged me. Now I know!

I mostly only tag users whom I read as reasonable enough to have a discussion with initially, but I’ve learned it doesn’t go well. And the booooooomer tag is for the prolific poster of boomer-ass memes.
(The combination of green and a positive vote count makes it look like I might be down for Islamophobia, but I just wanted a different color and I feel weird interacting with someone’s comments/posts after I’ve tagged them, because I’ve essentially prejudiced myself against them, so if they’re positive when I tag them, they’ll stay that way)
I hate that I instantly knew who you were talking about the moment you said boomer memes.
I color my own tags based on an escalating system of good/bad impressions - so someone who posted questionable opinions or insulted other commenters once or twice gets a dull gray, a repeat offender gets bumped up to yellow, and someone who’s shown a long-term pattern of toxic behavior gets the dreaded red tag. I save blocks for people who contribute absolutely nothing positive to the Fediverse - I think I have a few hundred tagged users but less than a dozen blocks.
Similarly, good posters go from white to blue to green, though since Voyager keeps track of and displays lifetime vote totals I only tend to tag the truly memorable posters.
That is such a cool feature. I should use this!
Its hilarious seeing the same “absolutely insane” tag that I have used.
There’s a few big names, I usually find it interesting seeing which instances people are on and whether they carry some kind of theme. The people in the Star Trek instance, forget the name, usually have pretty good memes for example
Ten Forward is the place to be
Picard or something I know the bloke your talking about
One think you can rely trekkies on for
So far, nobody’s mentioned recognizing me, despite the fact that I feel like I comment a lot (an unhealthy amount, really).
I’m not sure whether to feel insulted or relieved.
I recognize your name and have no negative memories of your comments
There is a good point to have for low profile lurkinators
There’t something about your username that sounds…gruesome…
I recognize you!
In the sense I’m scared of the grues.
Are you cursed or something? I have you at +194/-1 but only vaguely recognize your name. I have no idea how I’ve interacted with someone (let alone a classic video game reference) so many times without forming an opinion of them!
I for one, enjoy being a faceless number lol
