I’ve heard that Substack excels at what some people call “audience discovery”. I wonder how that works. I also don’t want to use Substack because of its Nazi problem.
I had a look at Ghost Pro, and I understand it is a blogging CMS combined with a mailing list solution. But it seems you pay extra for the latter if you self-host.
Long story short, I am considering blogging and I research privacy-respecting, self-hostable solutions, but I am afraid I will miss out on growth if I go the self-hostable way. After all, all these people out there, professional journalists included, prefer a managed solution, so they might know something more.
Any input is welcome.

Like most substacks, you won’t just run across the Nazi ones unless you have a link or search for them. The problem with Substack the company is that not only are they allowing Nazis there but they are profiting off of hosting Nazi content.
This I did not know. Really sad to hear and read, I started to like Substack because I finally found a place where I could read things I’m interested in without other stuff bloating my feed.
