I have a scooter that is supposed to go upwards of 50mph, although the state speed limit for e-scooters is 20mph, and I need to find a better helmet. I am currently using a bike helmet.
I live 2 hours outside the city, and whenever I do make it to the city I never have time to find a motorcycle shop to look for a helmet.
So I am looking for a good online source. I have no plans to take the scooter up to the full 50mph, but have had it going 35mph. Normally I am going 15-25 though.
You need an ECE 22.06, or better yet, SNELL rated full face motorcycle helmet. DOT is legally acceptable in the US but get better protection than the bare minimum.
Even 25mph is plenty fast for life altering (or ending) injuries, you can get messed up going even slower than that and the faster you go the amount of energy involved in an impact goes up way more than your speed increases.
Get yourself some motorcycle gloves and consider a jacket/pants/boots too especially if you’re going to be riding frequently.
Vendorwise, revzilla or motosport should be fine.
35-50mph is motorcycle territory, and you should get a motorcycle helmet (Snell-rated are the most safe, DOT-rated are less safe, anything unrated is trash). Helmets are the one piece of gear I take seriously, so here’s my spiel:
For a motorcycle helmet to work properly, you really need it to fit properly, and the only way to tell is to put it on and test it out. If it’s too loose, too tight, slightly wrong shape for your head, etc, that could negate most of the protection the helmet offers.
I urge you to make that trip to a shop that sells helmets and get a proper fit. Or at least order several models and sizes from the links others have posted and return anything that doesn’t fit perfectly.
I had a very dainty motorcycle crash in the rain once at no more than 10mph, and still ended up with a concussion because my helmet wasn’t the right fit. Made me realize how easily I could have died if I’d had a different crash, since I’d been relying on a helmet that was never going to protect me properly in the first place.
Also to note, a properly fitting helmet will be tight, but not painful.
Any ECE 22.06 or DOT rated motorcycle helmet is what you want.
https://www.revzilla.com/ or https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/ are where I’d start.
I second this suggestion: OP will very much want a full face helmet. Bicycle helmets have a general design requirement to keep bicyclists cooled by the wind to stay comfortable, which is why they usually don’t go down to cover the chin.
But motorbikes and scooters don’t have that requirement and instead have to deal with too much wind at higher speeds, in addition to greater risk of neck rotation upon ground contact.
