I’m very conflicted on the whole Linux-on-Apple thing. On one hand, it’s rather cool… on the other, I dislike the idea of giving money to a company that is outright hostile to the movement.

Understandable, but the hardware is out there, and the ability to run Linux on it is one more way to keep it out of the waste stream for a little longer.

This is my thought. I don’t know why I would ever end up with a mac, but if I did I would want Linux on it.

Just like Google phones for GrapheneOS, buy secondhand. You’re not giving the company a cent and you get to use something cool.

The idea that buying secondhand doesn’t support the original manufacturer is wrong

I don’t like how on Lemmy nothing is good enough, and I DO support this proposal if you need a new phone. However, to clarify this comment: by buying someone else’s phone, you are enabling the other person to get a newer model for less money, indirectly also contributing to a new purchase

This is an assumption you make, the second-hand eBay seller could just as easily turn around and use the profits on the second-hand market again.

I say this from my own personal experience though. I understand many just want a discount on the iPhone 256, but the assumption alone that buying second-hand actually encourages others to buy new is a bit too silly for me.

            Much like your first point,

I don’t like how on Lemmy nothing is good enough

Some of us really need to step back and breathe in.

While I’ve been a Linux user for a very long time, I’ve also been an Apple user for even longer. While love both, I only very recently combined them when I simply no longer could get by running Mac OS 10.15 on my 2012 iMac. The os was just to damned out-of-date to be useful anymore as my plex server, so I bit the bullet and migrated to Fedora 44 Workstation, and wow, I’m glad I did.

There were a couple of hiccups here and there, mostly with the fact that the primary display burned out many years ago, and I have to use the secondary display as a primary display, were just difficult to set up. But, otherwise, it runs really great.

Now, I don’t imagine I’ll have much use for linux on my nine month old MacBook Pro, but I’m really glad that I’ll have the option when the time comes.
