Back in the Python 2.7 days, curl | grep sh was the standard practice for installing the package manager, pip. Even better, the shell script actually had a binary blob somewhere in the middle. It was shell script up top, binary blob in the middle, and back to shell script at the bottom. Until Python 3.5ish, pip wasn’t bundled with Python, so this was standard practice.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you know any tricks to disenshittify a work computer?
3·4 days agoYou can watch YouTube in DuckDuckGo to the same effect as you mentioned in the description. A boring answer is that you can install basically anything if you can get access to cmd, power shell, or terminal. You can also install almost anything to user space instead of for all users. On Mac, this is kind of a hidden feature now, but you can make a
~/Applicationsfolder and put apps in there. Generally, if you ask IT, they can be helpful. “Hey, I need uBlock Origin so I waste less of my time at work.” isn’t going to make anyone blink twice.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you know any privacy-friendly DNS resolvers?
32·13 days agoI’ve been using a PiHole for years now. It’s super easy to set up. In practice, it’s been the most reliable thing I keep on a pi. Technically, you don’t need to host it on a raspberry pi, but you should host it on an always-on computer on your network.
Kind of a different way of looking at security; you can’t guarantee someone’s not keeping DNS logs, but you can guarantee that your DNS logs on a hard drive in your house aren’t being shared.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you could magically form new nations, which would you break away or unify? (non-serious)
1·15 days agoThey already do, they just didn’t tell you.
Count yourself lucky. Southern New Mexico wines are without a doubt the worst, sweetest wines in the world. They get a little better in northern New Mexico, but still not quite good.
Hey, I know that pistaccio! I hope you didn’t try any wines…

If you don’t have the algo_aead kernel module enabled, are you still vulnerable to this? Any systems don’t show it in
lsmodwhenever I’ve tried, does that mean most computers are OK?
